Ubuntu: mein Retter in der Not
Am vergangenen Wochenende hat mein Laptop seinen Dienst aufgekündigt. Ein paar Vorbeben gab es in der Woche zuvor schon: Plötzliches Displayflackern und anschließenderSystemabsturz zeigte, dass auch mein T41p von dem sog. Flexing-Problem betroffen ist. Mein Händler um die Ecke hat nur noch die Schultern gezuckt und mitleidig geseufzt.
Nun war guter Rat teuer: Mein PC, der nach einem ganzen Serverschrank klingt, ist nicht mehr der jüngste (BJ 2002) und kaum in der Lage zwei Office Programme parallel laufen zu lassen, geschweige denn ein Bildverarbeitungsprogramm. Also habe ich mich heute kurzentschlossen daran gemacht, Ubuntu zu installieren. Es war aufregend -wie früher bei einer Windows 3.x- Installation ;) -: Ich habe mir WUBI heruntergeladen, ein inoffizielles Installer-Programm, dass frau unter Windows ausführen kann und ab dann ging es fast wie von selbst: Die Installationsdateien von Ubuntu wurden runtergeladen und im Boot-Manager (der jetzt glaube ich Grub heißt ;-) fand sich nach einem Neustart der Ubuntu Eintrag. Im Anschluss hat Ubuntu dann automatisch alle Gerätetreiber geladen und installiert. Wirklich aufregend, wenn erst die Kamera einmal blinkt, dann die Dioden des USB Hubs und schließlich auch die Maus leuchtet und man eine leichte Zuversicht bekommt, dass es vielleicht wirklich alles ganz einfach klappt?
Und tatsächlich, nachdem die Installation fertig gestellt war, konnte ich sofort (!) ins Netz (sogar mit WLAN, was ich unter XP nie hingekriegt hatte), die Webcam kann mich 'sehen' und der Drucker druckt. Ich habe alle notwendigen Programme, die ich für meine Arbeit heute gebraucht habe und das System läuft wirklich schnell. Ok, leiser ist der PC dennoch nicht geworden, aber : Ich bin begeistert :)!
